Bill Jenkins was too young to go to war without parental permission, which his father Robert gave, much against Bill's mother Annie’s wishes. Bill was killed in action on April 5, 1918, seven months before the war ended.
Bill chronicled his experience of the war in letters he sent to his family.
Bill's May 13, 1917 letter is transcribed below.

My Dear Parents,
Just a few lines in answer to your most welcome letters I received a few days ago was so pleased to hear from you again and to know you are quite well as same leaves me at present.
We have been having a very decent time here lately lovely weather six weeks with out any rain but it started to rain tody but I don’t think it will be much.
I suppose you will have Mag home by this time. It will be a big help to you no so much work now. Just fancy Win Huddlestone being engaged to be married silly young begger isn’t she. Well mother news is very scarce here now so you will have to be satisfied with a short letter this time so will ring off now with heaps of love and kisses from your
