Transcript (not verbatim)

Could you tell me where you went to school?

Here

You both went to school here,  Miss Fletcher?

I think there is only one building now. There was only one building to start with, then they put another one in.

Where was it?

Where it is now. In that area where it is now. Of course now it is all covered with buildings you see, but then it was quite close to those front gates.

And what was the township like? Was it a booming little village?

Oh no. Tongariro Street was just pumice and there was the bungalow on the corner where Woolworth’s is, along from there (it wasn’t quite there, there was nothing there), you think it was higher up, where perhaps, what’s that on the corner, where the National
Bank is - in between that and the corner. Somewhere in that area and then of course Sampson’s Garage was where the National Bank is
now. Yes. And then, of course, there was the garage there, Gillies opposite, that was opposite, and then there was Rickit's Store, (the garage was later) and then there was Reid's (Busy Store) on the opposite corner. There was Rickit's Store.

When was the hall built?

Rickit’s Hall, cause I can only remember  that. There was Rickit's Store, the hall, which.......came right on the corner of Horomatangi St and then opposite that where they have got that Video shop now was Reid’s.

Was there anything between there and Heuheu St?

No, there was an old lady there. Mr’s Noble had a small library.

That was on Tongariro St, wasn’t it?

On the corner and then the Lake Hotel. That was about all. There was another one, very long sort of one right at the bottom by the Lake Terrace. We used to play in it. That was the first hotel and it wasn’t used in our day, but we used to go down and play in it. Between Roberts St. and the lakefront.
